Pancake Breakfast
Saturday morning, October 27th, 2007

We had a great turnout. 191 people showed up for our Pancake Breakfast this year! Just look at all the cars! Our eight cooks did a great job on the pancakes and sausages!

Charlie Austin & Jerry King got everyone to park close together so that we could fit a lot of cars in the parking lot by pond E. back) Hal Sheakley & Steve Perry

As usual, we had a great selection of used nature books for sale, thanks to the generous book donations from our members. Jan Gaffney and her helpers at the Book Sales Table sold 218 books to 72 customers, making $670.90 on the day of the event.

The pancake batter was mixed in large pails (see above) using an electric drill with a long paddle attached. The pancakes were cooked on large griddles and the cooks did a great job squeezing the batter on to the griddles so that the pancakes were evenly spaced, and then turning them at just the right moment to make sure they were done to perfection. Everyone said those pancakes were light and fluffy and delicious! Sharon O'Brien is working on the pancakes in the photos below.

We're lucky to finally have a company here in Orange County which has a great selection of scopes and binoculars just for birders. Optics4Birding recently opened their new store in the southern section of Irvine. Wild Birds Unlimited has a store not far away in Mission Viejo for anyone interested in wild birds and especially for people who like to feed them.

Bruce Aird and Steve Sosensky from Optics4Birding brought lots of binoculars and scopes for people to try out.

Dave Brandt from Wild Birds Unlimited brought bird feeders and wild bird. He answered lots of questions about how to attract wild birds to feeders and to gardens.

Here are more pictures of some of our fabulous cooks for the Pancake Breakfast. They did a great job working together as a team and producing a delicious breakfast for us.

Scott Thomas coordinated the Pancake Breakfast. He organized the entire event, did the food shopping, supervised the layout for the breakfast, made arrangements with the Irvine Ranch Water District to display the Pancake Breakfast banners and to use their griddles, got the Pancake Breakfast supplies out of storage, and helped with practically every aspect of our event. His wife, Cheryl, worked hand and hand with him for the event. I think you'll agree that they both did an outstanding job!

The interior of the Duck Club was full of people eating their pancake breakfasts. Janet Baumann and her set up crew did a nice job Friday night before the breakfast. They decorated the tables so that the room looked warm and hospitable and organized the breakfast supplies so that the meal ran smoothly the next morning.
