This section contains the field trips which will take  place this year (Sept. 2005 to Aug. 2006).  After each outing, a list of birds seen on the trip will be posted here.    Those of you who just returned from going on a particular trip, will be able to look it up to find out what the group as a whole saw.  And, if you missed a trip and wonder what you missed, this page will provide you with an opportunity to find out.

Upper Newport Bay by ELECTRIC BOAT:  Wed., Sept. 21st

Bird List: Unfortunately, it began raining after the first stop, and the trip was terminated.  The Screech-Owls are not vocally  active when it  rains, and the trip participants were riding in the back of an open truck!

FIELD NATURAL HISTORY WALK at Starr Ranch:   Wed., Nov. 9th

It is such a pleasure to hike at Starr where there are no mountain bikes or cars to dodge and there is an abundance of natural things to observe. The birds, deer and other animals seem to tolerate our company as well. Here are some of the animals seen on this trip: Mule Deer,
Tarantula, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Black Phoebe, California Towhee, Spotted Towhee, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, House Finch, and Cochineal;

Becky had put fresh sent on the scent stations the night before our arrival and so we were fortunate to observe some of the best animal tracks I have seen. They included: Mountain Lion tracks, Bobcat tracks, Raccoon tracks, Gray Fox tracks. Dusky-footed Wood Rat tracks.

OWLING at Starr Ranch Sanctuary: Sat., Jan. 21st

Birds: Scott Thomas and crew were here banding owls and luckily caught a Barn Owl right before the trip began. It was a female, adult. Everyone got to see her up close, and watch while she was measured and banded. Before we started, we heard 2 Great Horned Owls calling outside of the banding lab in response to a tape Becky was playing inside. One of the owls was giving the "harnk" call.Stop One: nothing. . . .Stop Two: 2 Western Screech-Owls. We heard their "trill" call and the "bouncing ball" call; we also heard 2 Barn Owls and many Pacific Tree Frogs. . . . Stop Three: 1 Barn Own. . . . Stop Four: 3 Barn Owls. . . . Stop Five: 1 Barn Owl and 2 Western Screech-Owls (one flew right above the truck). We stopped to warm up a little with some hot cider which Becky offered us, while the second Screech-Owl starting calling the typical "bouncing ball" call. . . .Stop Six: 1 Western Screech-Owl and 1 Barn Owl.
