Wed,
Aug. 19 = Upper Newport Bay by pontoon boat
Leader: Nancy Kenyon
|
Comments:The
weather was perfect for our morning’s trip; it was cool,
slightly damp, and overcast.Though all the birds we saw looked
gray, we had no problems having to squint into the sun because
the sun was obscured. We did, however, have some trouble identifying
a large flock of peeps which were scattered along the shore
of a little island in amongst fragments of driftwood, litter,
small rocks, and vegetation. All the birds appeared to have
gray underparts instead of the usual white, so it took us a
little while to figure out that they were Western Sandpipers.
One of the Spotted Sandpipers we saw, still had a few spots
on its belly. Several of the Black-bellied Plovers had a lot
of black on their bellies. The Black-crowned Night-Heron on
the shore by the boat dock kept calling a squeaky little call,
not at all like the adults’ typical woc one normally associates
with these birds. We had trouble hearing the birds further up
the channel because a young man
was standing on the edge of the bluff lustily blowing his trumpet
and he seemed particularly fond of notes in the higher register.
We saw quite a few large Mullet “jumping” out of
the water. Just when we were beginning to think we’d never
find a flock of the larger shorebirds, we spotted 25+ slow-moving
widely scattered Willets in the cord grass. A male Belted Kingfisher
gave us quite a show, perched on a nearby stick protruding out
of the water nearby, and in a little inlet on the east side,
we discovered a couple of Wilson’s Phalaropes. It was
a great morning for birding!
