Wed,
Aug. 20 = Upper
Newport Bay by small boat
Leader:
Sally Menzel |
Comments:
There were no ducks anywhere except for Mallards. We encountered
a huge flock of Western Sandpipers which we had to estimate
the number of since there were too many of get an accurate
count. Many of the 84 Black-bellied Plovers were still in
breeding plumage. The terns were noisy and quarrelsome as
usual. The Black Skimmers were busy hunting up and down the
waterway — they're always so much fun to watch! We also
saw a female Northern Harrier sitting on land, preening. The
dredge had moved way up past the salt dikes close to the Jamboree
bridge. We were told that more money had been received to
at least cover the flat areas as planned. Chuck told us about
seeing 10-12 Barn Owls flying in and out of the high sandstone
cliffs on a recent evening trip he led on Aug. 16. On a sad
note, he mentioned that one of the young Ospreys had been
found shot dead.

Sat,
Sept. 13 = San Elijo Lagoon
Leader:
Steve Brad |
| Comments:
Over 20 people attended the
Sept. 13th special sandpiper ID walk at San Elijo Lagoon, including
members from both Sea & Sage and Buena Vista Audubon. We
identified 8 different species of sandpipers, learning how to
tell juveniles from adults, especially important in helping
differentiate Least from Western Sandpipers, and these common
“peeps” from their rarer cousins. Other interesting
sightings included more than 6 Clapper Rails out and about in
the shallow water next to the trail, a perched Osprey brunching
on a freshly caught fish, and a group of 20 Whimbrels foraging
together around the lagoon. A special day in a special place.

Comments:
It was high tide and the mudflats were covered with water.
(Due to the motor vibrations on this boat, we are unable to
use a scope, so we're restricted to binoculars.) As we began
our trip, we watched a few Black Skimmers as they flew up
and down the channel feeding in the still water. There were
no ducks anywhere except for 5 Mallards. We were excited to
find that the Belted Kingfishers had returned and saw 5 of
them in different areas along the way. Throughout the trip
we watched the Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets hunting
for food in the grassy areas, their long necks motionless,
protruding well above the vegetation. We found 2 Ospreys,
one perched on a pole on the dredger and the other in a distant
tree on shore. Most of the birds we saw along the shore were
inactive except for the egrets which were wading around in
the water, busily feeding, and the Forster's Terns. In the
cordgrass at the mouth of a little inlet, we discovered a
well hidden Clapper Rail. A large number of "peeps"
(Western & Least Sandpipers) were seen flying down the
channel in groups of 25-50, but they never were close enough
for us to properly identify. We did, however, find one flock
hunkered down in some dry sand along the shore and they were
close enough and still enough for us to distinguish the species.
As usual, the pipes from the dredger that run along each side
of the channel prevented us from venturing closer to shore
for better views of the birds. This was frustrating when we
sighted a group of 3 yellowlegs standing by a grassy point,
but were unable to get close enough to them for identification.
However, it was a beautiful morning to be out in the bay and
we had a great time!

Comments:
Our big birding event was hearing
the cactus wrens several times. They (it) was on the hillside
just above the nature trail. There was lots of animal evidence
along the trail and the deer were out at midday and in large
numbers as usual. We concluded our walk with some fruit (tunas)
and nut samples that were offered to show the diversity of the
food our local animals consume.

Wed,
Oct. 15 = Upper Newport Bay by pontoon boat
Leader:
Nancy Kenyon |
| Comments:
Comments: We
had perfect weather for our boat trip this morning, It was sunny,
warm, clear and very calm. We enjoyed beautiful reflections
of the shoreline and bluff along with good views of the San
Gabriels in the background. The tide was high so there were
very flew mudflats. In fact, we only saw two shorebird clusters,
one at the traditional location next to the Big Canyon outfall
and the other along the west shore further up the channel on
a narrow strip of land at the water's edge. The long pipes from
the dredger were in a different location today and were protruding
out of the water, providing good perches for some of the shorebirds,
among which were Spotted Sandpipers and Willets. We noticed
that other birds also took advantage of the dredging activity's
poles & posts: one post in the water supported a Belted
Kingfisher, a pole on the dredger had an Osprey on it with a
commanding view of the surrounding water, and a row of buoys
made good perches for Forster's Terns. The 3 Northern Harriers
we saw were active this morning, 1 was swooping over the pickleweed,
another was flying around and being harassed by an American
Kestrel, and the third was on the ground eating. Last month,
the only species of waterfowl we had were Mallards; this month
we saw American Wigeons and Mallards, as well as a very small
number of Cinnamon Teals, Northern Shovelers and Ruddy Ducks.
We encountered an unusually large number of Say's Phoebes -13
in all - perched on the tops of various protruding sticks along
the shore; usually, we get only 2 or 3 Says' Phoebes on a trip.
Hopefully, they will stick around! When the trip was over, I
drove along Back Bay Drive and up to Jamboree, with frequent
stops to listen to the birds. At several stops, I encountered
clouds of tiny flying insects; maybe the phoebes were attracted
to the influx of insects possibly brought out by the unseasonably
warm weather we've been having. . . It was a splendid morning
to be out on the bay and we had a great time! |

Reports for November 2008: |
Sat,
Nov. 1 = Owl Prowl at Starr Ranch
Leader:
Pete DeSimone |
Trip
Report: On
Nov. 1st, we had a short nighttime excursion in Starr Ranch
known as the “Owl Prowl.” Our evening began with
an orientation in the classroom where we watched a couple of
Barn Owls by means of the live cam. Pete DeSimone who has been
Manager of Starr Ranch Sanctuary since the mid 1980s and knows
all about the owls and hawks which inhabit Bell Canyon, spoke
with us about the Barn Owls and answered many of our questions
about owl behavior. We then boarded the open bed truck for a
short ride into Bell Canyon to search for some owls. At each
stop, Pete played recordings of owl calls while we listened
for owl replies and watched carefully for any sight of them.
Audubon CA Starr Ranch Sanctuary is a wonderful place during
daylight hours; at night, it becomes almost magical. The sky
was completely covered by a soft gray blanket of clouds that
evening so there were no stars or moon to shed their light on
the canyon. Due to the cloud cover, the temperature was quite
warm and the air reverberated with the sounds of the Cricket
Chorus. The oaks and sycamores formed dark silhouettes against
the hillside above us and the sweet scent of grass and sage
brush filled the night air. As Pete slowly drove the truck down
the bumpy dirt road into Bell Canyon, he made frequent stops
for the Common Poorwills which were sitting in the road. They
appeared to be confused by the sudden brilliance of our truck’s
headlights and did not fly off until we were almost on top of
them. Though we did not actually see an owl, we definitely heard
them, first the Barn Owls near the classroom, then several Western
Screech-Owls along the way, and finally, a lone Great Horned
Owl calling his soft mellow hoot from a dense thicket of trees.
It was a wonderful night to be out in the gentle wilderness
of Starr Ranch and we were reluctant to leave its quiet solitude.

Leader:

|
"Wilderness
Interpretation" group taken by Don Millar. The
background is the "Sinks". This area is known
as O.C.'s answer to the grand canyon and it is a delightful
sight from all around its rim. |
|
There
was a total of eleven of us and our focus as we hiked up through
Hangman's Canyon was to identify some of the many bird tracks
we encountered along the way and to begin to classify the various
bird sounds we heard in to one of four categories: 1) alarm
or warning, 2) song, 3) pleading to be fed and 4) the various
contact calls such as we heard from the quail as they were scurrying
around in the brush.
Besides the scenery at the Sinks, there was lots of neat stuff
to observe and contemplate. The trip leader (me) was indulged
as he told us about the early history of the canyon and particularly
the role of one of its infamous crooks by the name of Juan Flores
and his escapades back in the mid 1800's. Then a little bit
of a challenge as the group followed a narrow deer trail along
the peak of the canyon before slowly descending the Merkel Trail
enroute back to our cars.
Several of the guests and guides then went over to have lunch
at the historic Silverado Cafe which is located right in the
middle of the old mining community.
All in all, a very pleasant way to spend a beautiful fall morning.
