Cape May Trip
September 15-21, 2012
Trip Leader - Jon Feenstra

This trip is under the auspices of WINGS, a professional bird-watching tour company with an excellent reputation. Jon Feenstra is a regular WINGS tour leader. When he has time, he also volunteers his services as a field trip leader for pelagic trips here in Southern California and other outings such as the seasonal trip to the Piute Ponds. Those of us who have gone on trips with Jon are impressed with his comprehensive knowledge of the birds and his skill as a leader.
Last September's Cape May Trip was such a wonderful birding experience for the seven of us who went, that we quickly scheduled another Cape May Trip with Jon Feenstra for September 2012. This is a private WINGS birding tour just fpr Sea & Sage members. The trip will be limited to 7 people. If you are interested in going on it, please contact Nancy Kenyon, Field Trip Chair, right away. She will send you more information on the trip and can answer any questions you might have.

Here is the blurb about Jon Feenstra from the WINGS website:
Raised in the Appalachian ridges of northwestern New Jersey, Jon Feenstra’s playground was the outdoors. He grew up holding a fishing pole and a pair of binoculars. After college he moved from New Jersey to Los Angeles to complete graduate research in physical chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. There he became active in Southern California birding: leading field trips, writing articles on bird distribution and local issues, and spending time exploring the diverse and bird-rich area. He finished his Ph.D. and decided to make birding his full-time passion. When not traveling the country or the world, Jon lives in urban Los Angeles and works as a free-lance ecological consultant. He volunteers for the Pasadena and Los Angeles Audubon Societies, has served on the board of directors of Western Field Ornithologists, leads most of Southern California’s pelagic trips, and has contributed to several publications on terrestrial and pelagic bird distribution. During any other time he reads widely, supports the local music scene, and plans his next adventure.

Jon's experience as a trip leader for Cape May trips:
He grew up in New Jersey & is very familiar with the area. He led his first trip for WINGS 2 years ago on a similar trip for Pasadena Audubon and has continued to do similar trips since. On the WINGS website, he is listed with the senior leaders & staff. Other tours he is leading this year are:
• Jordan, Spring Migration and a Little Archaeology in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
• Southern California in Winter
• New Jersey: Cape May
• Ecuador: A Week in Paradise
• Ecuador: The Eastern Foothills of the Andes

Trip itinerary: The following link to the WINGS website describes the general trip itinerary for our 2012 Cape May Trip. This itinerary is not "set in stone" and may be changed see rare birds, large flocks of migrating birds, or to adjust to different weather conditions.
