Sea & Sage Audubon
Junior Naturalist Program

The Junior Naturalist Program was established in 2001 in response to teenagers who had attended Advanced Camp and wanted continuing activities during the rest of the year.  The purpose is to provide enriched nature experiences, foster leadership skills, provide social contacts with other teens with similar interests in the outdoors.  The program is coordinated by adult Volunteer Naturalists under the direction of Trude Hurd, Project Director of Education, Sea and Sage Audubon.
.
Junior Naturalists have a great time participating in field trips and getting to know other teens from area schools who are interested in learning more about nature.  Monthly field trips focus on exploring different habitats and have included outings to local beaches and parks.  In addition, there were overnight camping trips to Casper’s Regional Park, Malibu Creek State Park and Cuyamaca State Park and also an overnight trip to Lake Arrowhead.
.
Our program is a good fit for teens who have an interest in the outdoors and a desire to learn more about birds, habitats and conservation.  Our program would also appeal to Scouts who have completed the Bird Study Merit Badge and to science students interested in broadening their experiences in the natural world.
.
Currently, a $20.00 annual membership fee is requested.  This fee covers administrative costs of the program.  Activities are scheduled on a pay-as-you-go basis.  As an example, kayaking and overnight camping trips cost about $15.00 per activity.
.
A minimum amount of equipment is recommended.  For most trips a pair of binoculars, a field guide, a hat, water and a sack lunch are all that are needed.  The adult coordinators will be happy to help you choose binoculars and a field guide if you desire.
.
To become a Junior Naturalist the applicant must:
1. Be at least 13 years old by November 1st.
2. Have attended Advanced Bird Camp OR earned the Scout Bird Study Merit Badge OR be recommended by his/her science teacher.
3. Be a member of Sea and Sage Audubon (student $15, or family membership $20 new; $35 renewing)
4. Complete an application form including a very short essay about what it means to you to be a Junior Naturalist.
5. Agree to participate in at least four activities during the year.
