June 22 - American Kestrel Invasion

I know it's biology and the kestrels are just doing their job- that of raising their young during this time of year, but can someone please tell them to stop taking our least tern chicks? The observed taking of chicks has been almost constant for the last few weeks, and since our last note, Wally continues to set traps for daily. He captured a Cooper's hawk yesterday, but no American kestrels.

There may be one bright spot to the story observed by Paul Doyle last night- two kestrels in the Preserve. While one was sitting on the fence, another hunted, captured a chick, and gave it to the other. Could this be a recently fledged kestrel? My hope is that they will be off to hunt elsewhere, but now they both know about the tern chick food source. Go find some mice-please.
