June 11 - Count from June 11

Hi guys,

Here are the numbers from Friday, 6/11/2010:

Total nests to date: 414 (48 new for the week)
Chicks inside the nest: 46
Chicks outside the nest: 217
Dead adults: 1
Dead chicks: 1
Depredated nests: 1

The American Kestrel is still preying upon the colony. He has been being seen around 9:15am every day. On Friday, Wally set some live-mice traps around 8:30am. The Kestrel showed up at 10:15am, ignored the traps, and went straight for the chicks. He attempted to get one chick inside the preserve, but dropped it. He then went to the front yard, picked up another chick and flew off with it. Hopefully he can be trapped.

Other than that, the colony is looking pretty good. We continue to see some courting and fish exchanges.

Have a great week,

-Cyndie
