Least Tern & Snowy Plover Project

May 14 - We are off to a great start!

Hi guys,

Well, we are off to a great start! There were 167 nests in the preserve and 59 in the front yard, for a total of 226 nests! Not bad for our first day out. We re noticing some different trends this year so far: there were 9 nests with 3 eggs — last year, we only had 1 nest with 3 eggs, and the previous years, there were none. Also, most of the nests had 2 eggs compared to previous years where many of the frist nests only had one egg.

We spotted one crow and one Great Blue Heron today. Dick Zembal had also seen a peregrine. The birds were flushed several times by military helicopters and a few gulls flying over the preserve.

Let's keep our fingers crossed for a great season! I've attached a few pics.

Have a good weekend.
