May 10 - A Short Note

Last week we lost the spotting scope and tripod. Some characters broke into the Magnolia Kiosk and took two things- the scope and a small handheld radio for the lifeguard tower at the Santa Ana River tower. They didn't take any other item of value, so I'm not sure they were really thinking. So, until we can replace this tool, I suggest you bring your own if you have one. Spotting scopes are a valuable tool to interpret bird biology when birds are nesting, eggs are in the nest and, when chicks are moving about. When details are seen up close, it makes anyone’s experience more valuable.

The outside fencing is now complete with no gaps in the chick fencing. If any gaps appear, please point them out on your data sheet.

We are still seeing a pair of crows being bold in the Preserve. They hang out in the Sanitation District by the tall palms and fly in on the Santa Ana River side of the colony. They fly through the middle, and along the fence line while getting dive-bombed the entire time. They tend to land close to the chainlike fence. Scare them off if possible. We do not see the killdeer mentioned two days ago, and suspect they got their eggs.
