| By
most indications, the first wave of nests has hatched and
we are developing chicks and young fledglings. There have
been observations of very mature fledged birds and some receiving
fishing training in the shallow waters next to the beach.
It appears we have survived another wild 4th of July except
for one problem. |

Mike
and Barbara Sentovich bicycled into the closed Huntington
State Beach at about 10AM on the 4th of July. This is probably
the only way you could get into the park as the Coast Highway
was blocked from Golden West to Beach Blvd. for the Main Street
Parade, 5k run, and evening fireworks. They saw a great egret
inside the main fencing. They tried to shoo it away as it
moved from the West to the South sides. After the third good
throw with a rock, the bird flew across the highway to the
Talbert Marsh. I’m not sure that it took any chicks,
but its possible. They appropriately called Wally Ross who
picked up the call after midday. Knowing the street conditions,
it might of taken till the next day to respond. So, good throw
Mike! You got the job done. At least we’re not still
seeing kestrels….

That’s
all to report. I hope July will be less troublesome. |
