2009
Least Tern & Snowy Plover Project

August 27 - A Tern in the Season

To all Docents, volunteers and interested parties, here’s the scoop on the awards banquet last night and the 2009 California Least Tern season at Huntington State Beach (see Notes from the 2009 season):

Our Birder of the Year award goes to Irene Horiuchi who visited the most days, and always had great documentation and accurate sightings.

Honorable mention Birder of the Year goes to Bobbie Miller who had about as many days, but spent a few more hours each day that she participated.

Special Recognition and a Certificate of Appreciation goes to Nora Papian who saw excess beach debris after the big surf and organized a beach clean up with her Junior Naturalists group. For her special efforts and support of the Junior Naturalists, a Certificate of Appreciation was given to Kate Grabenstein.

And, Outstanding First Year Participant award was given to the team of Ross Griswold and Patti Cacho-Negrete for their frequent visits, excellent photos, and quotable quotes.

Outstanding efforts were also recognized for continuous contribution in all of the first 5 years of program, by:
Cheryl Egger
Claire Grozinger
Nancy Kenyon
Keith Olwin
Bob Seabourn
Cheryl Searcy

Cheryl Egger is annually singled out for special commendation with her vital coordinating efforts of information dissemination, scheduling, training, and recognition of others. She remains a model of excellence. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks Cheryl.

The terns had a good year, the 6th highest number of pairs on record with 409. From our data sheets the first birds were recorded April 28, first nest on May 12, first chick on May 30, first fledge on June 5 and the last tern on July 28. We compared these dates with last year’s records and they match very closely.

A big THANK YOU to all that helped make this season a success. Visit the park, record snowy plovers counts during the “winter,” come back to join us next season, and bring a new friend with you.
