May 28 - Updates: Least Tern Preserve - from Cheryl

From Cyndie--inside counts:

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, it looks like we are experiencing a lot of predation at the preserve this year. Yesterday, we found 68 of the nests had been depredated! We also came across 2 pairs of adult least tern wings, 2 heads, 1 complete body, and numerous egg shell fragments. This is quite an unfortunate start of the season. So far the numbers are as follows:

Total nests = 208
Depredated nests = 68
Active nests to date (total - depredated) = 140

On a good note, Wally came down and placed some crow carcasses inside the preserve. Yesterday, we did not see any crows hanging out on the preserve fence or flying overhead ... So hopefully the carcasses are acting as a good deterrent!

I hope there will be better news next week!

Most Recent Counts at Seal Beach Colony:

2 weeks ago 14 nests, last Monday (5/19) 49 nests and yesterday 133 nests. Charles Collins does the count and he said there were 6100 Elegant Tern nests at Bolsa Chica. Thank you, Bill Cullen.

Photos posted on website: Some great photos, recently taken by Glenn Price, of the terns at the preserve have been posted on the Sea and Sage Audubon website, by Nancy Kenyon. Please visit the site for all information postings and photos.

www.seaandsageaudubon.org On the Home page go to LEAST TERN/SNOWY PLOVER project, then to 2008 Nesting Season and scroll down to see Reports, Messages and Photos. Thank you, Nancy!

Open shifts that need substitutes: Both the 9-11 and 11-1, on June 4 and June 11. Please let me know if you can help. Also, if anyone can fill in any of the empty slots in the schedule, please let me know.

Thanks,
Cheryl
