Least Tern Preserve - from

From
Cyndie--inside counts:
Hi everyone,
Unfortunately, it looks like we are experiencing a lot of
predation at the preserve this year. Yesterday, we found 68
of the nests had been depredated! We also came across 2 pairs
of adult least tern wings, 2 heads, 1 complete body, and numerous
egg shell fragments. This is quite an unfortunate start of
the season. So far the numbers are as follows:
Total nests = 208
Depredated nests = 68
Active nests to date (total - depredated) = 140
On a good note, Wally came down and placed some crow carcasses
inside the preserve. Yesterday, we did not see any crows hanging
out on the preserve fence or flying overhead ... So hopefully
the carcasses are acting as a good deterrent!
I hope there will be better news next week!

were 6100 Elegant Tern nests at Bolsa Chica. Thank you, Bill
Cullen. |
