Tern Numbers as of 5/20 (129 nests today!) |
Docents,
Wow! Take a look at the # of nests now!
It was very busy down there today, but only with terns, not
people. The beach was void of surfers (guess it was blown
out), so the terns were loafing and courting on the beach.
Quite beautiful! There were a few crows around.
Just a quick note from me regarding open shifts.
Friday 5/23 is open 11-1, but not 1-3.
Monday 5/26 is Memorial Day and may be a busy beach day. There
is an open shift that day from 9-11.
Please let me know if anyone can cover these.
Thanks,
Cheryl
P.S .Please remember to call Wally Ross right away if
you see any active predation. He may not be that far away
and can respond. His # is on your badge. Thanks. |

| A
note from Cyndie — |
Hi
Everyone,
It looks like the terns are really getting going now ... We
had a total of 129 nests today! That's quite a jump
from the 18 nests we had just 4 days ago.
There were also signs of predation - we found 4 eggs that
were cracked open (not in a nest), and 2 nests from Friday
that no longer had eggs in them. We also came across 2 pairs
of adult tern wings, and one of the monitors from Monday witnessed
a kestrel taking an adult tern. There was one adult tern in
the front yard area that was freshly dead, but there were
no signs of predation.
There continued to be crows (6 or 7) on the fence and down
in the colony - they were being mobbed by the terns. Wally
Ross was down at the preserve in the morning to check things
out.
That's all for now :)
Cyndie
