Tern Nest Counts |

We'll
know tomorrow (Friday) if we have significant nest starts
at Huntington Beach. The Huwes saw an egg last Friday and
Monte Taylor reports one nest with one egg on 5-14. Claire
Grozinger, Barbara Sentovich and Cheryl Searcy have reported
American crows inside the preserve over the last two days,
but no active predation. A Cooper's Hawk has been frequenting
the Natural Preserve every other day or so, and today, I saw
a Black-crowned Night-Heron on the ocean side chain link (a
first). All are on our watch-because-I-don't-trust-this-bird
list. Please call Dave or Wally with any active predation
events, and do try all you can to scare them away.
Lately, there has been a motorized hang glider in the area,
and if he harasses the birds, please call a peace officer.
It is illegal to land this craft on State Park property. Kite
surfing is also illegal on the State Beaches, but this has
become popular on the Newport side of the Santa Ana River.
Keep an eye out for this activity near the tern preserve.
On the aerial attack topic- Kelly O'Rielly, DFG, and I met
with the Aero Unit of Huntington Beach PD yesterday on the
topic of helicopter operations within the City. We have a
better understanding of their unique perspective on police
work, and they have a fine-tuned appreciation for the Bolsa
Chica Preserve and our Preserve and the sensitive species
contained therein. We will most likely do a test fly-by at
different heights during full nesting season to gauge disturbance.
Data sheets- use the digital form only if most convenient
for you, and if you use the clipboard, please rotate use of
a pen/pencil between users. I can better respond to specific
questions or notations. Thanks
