June 10 - Least Tern Numbers (report from Cyndie)

Hi everyone,

Things continue to look good at the Preserve! The only signs of predation in the colony this week were a pair of adult least tern wings found inside the main enclosure. The number of chicks is growing, with a few running around outside of their nest already. Here are the numbers for the week:

Total number of nests to date: 407

Total number of depredated nests: 68

Total number of active/hatched nests (407 - 68): 339

Here are the numbers regarding the chicks:

Total number of chicks still in the nest: 40

Total number of chicks out of the nest: 6 (this number is always an estimate, as it is difficult to get an exact count of chicks that are running around!)

I've included 2 photos from last year of the chicks - (not posted on this page)

We marked the one lone nest out in the Snowy Plover yard. Dave mentioned possibly making a chick corral to protect those chicks ... I'll keep you posted on that.

Until next week ...
