Least Tern & Snowy Plover Project

June 4th - Least Tern count from Cyndie

Hi everyone,

The Least Terns seem to be doing much better this week, as we had no depredated nests yesterday! A big "thank you" to Dave and Wally for their predator control efforts (which seem to be working so far), and also to all the docents who keep their eyes on the colony and provide valuable information. We couldn't do it without you! Here are the numbers from yesterday:

Total number of nests to date: 367

Total number of depredated nests: 68

Total number of active nests as of yesterday (367 - 68): 299

We only came across one pair of adult least tern wings in the "front yard" yesterday. We also now have 2 chicks from 2 different nests (both in the "front yard") ... A really good sign! One chick is located at nest #96, which is very close to the front yard fence, about half-way down, for any docents that might want to catch a glimpse.

One last thing to note - we found a Least Tern nesting in the Snowy Plover yard (the roped-off area next to the "front yard" by the Santa Ana river), and as far as we can tell, there's only that one.

Until next week ...

Cyndie
