End of Season Awards |
Thank
you
The Awards
BBQ for this season's volunteer monitors happened last night
at the Huntington State Beach Lifeguard Headquarters. We had
a great evening sharing stories and anecdotes from this year's
observations, comparing range wide numbers with other colonies,
and eating lots of great food at the potluck. This was an
evening of thanks and praise for the outstanding efforts by
many. In fact, the number one guy, the Park Superintendent,
Joe Milligan, shared the evening with us, thanked the group
repeatedly and said, “One of our difficult management
situations is when our own Mission Statement has conflicting
goals. In this case, the goal of balancing recreational demands
with resource protection. Volunteer hard work educating people
can be done better than us, due to a low level of compliance
mixed with species information.“ |
| Awards |
| You
may have already heard, but our Birder of the Year
is Bob McElhiney
for his outstanding contributions towards the survival of
this endangered species at the Natural Preserve. |
| The
Certificate for Photographer of the Year
goes to Robert Harrington
for his outstanding visual efforts, sharing his exposures,
finding the rare birds of different age classes or banded
fledglings, and developing a postcard hand out. |
| Cheryl
Egger received high praise from all for her
continued outstanding efforts as volunteer coordinator, email
information hub, distributor of photos, producer of the compilation
of excellent photos into a slide show for the evening, and
arranging for the recognition of all volunteers at the banquet.
We would be lost without her efforts. |
| Golden
Nest Sticks went to Cheryl
Egger, Nancy
Kenyon (Sea and Sage Webmaster), Vic
Leipzig, and Lou Murray (columnists of “Natural
Perspectives” in the Huntington Beach Independent newspaper)
for their efforts educating others about our organization
so we can help the species. |
| Certificates
of Appreciation were passed out to all in attendance,
including one for the Sea and Sage Conservation Committee
for their support. Individual certificates will be sent on
to all of you who were not able to be there. A hearty thanks
to all. |

| Although
the terns are gone for the season, Western Snowy Plovers have
returned to their winter grounds at the beach. We track their
numbers year round, so if you need a good excuse to visit
the beach - fill out a data sheet for us. Remember that zero
is a valid number and is just as important to record. |

Thanks
again for a great season.
