August 29th - Significant Field Observations
at the CA Least Tern Preserve at Huntington State Beach
 
Mar. 05 - 28 W. Snowy Plover seen near Brookhurst during Talbert Channel sand removal
Mar. 08 - 17 W. Snowy Plover Audubuon Tour of Preserve, Talbert sand removal
Apr. 13 - 16 W. Snowy Plover at Preserve, -L. Hays
Apr. 16 - 24 Semipalmated Plovers at south end of Preserve
Apr. 17 - Sand moved from front of wind fence by dozer
Apr. 18 - Sand moved by dozer. New signs placed
Apr. 22 - First adult Least Tern seen at Preserve
May 05 - 50-75 Least Terns, courting, landing in Preserve. Red tide near shore
May 11 - Ground squirrel on jetty. -McElhiney
May 13 - Remains of Great Egret in sand. Least Tern found near water, tangled in seaweed - buried. 8 helicopters today.
May 15 - Killdeer pair drawing crow away from nest. Rock thrown at crow.
May 16 - Red tide obvious. Rabbit & squirrel at Santa Ana River jetty rocks.
May 18 - Red tide heavy; surfers oblivious. Least Tern courting behavior. . . "won't be long now."
FWS in for count - no eggs seen. 2 GBHE on river. 2 crows inside front porch; 2 shots and "avast ye-be gone!" Lots of fish in pond. Got to watch fishing over and over.
May 19 - 3 giant squid being eaten by gulls. American Kestrel caught mouse inside colony and flew to palms on NB side.
May 20 - Surfer said he'd seen Black Skimmers. Biker wanted to look through binocs at terns.
May 21 - Raven circled colony twice. Tar balls on beach.
May 28 - Mute Swan circled area and went inland. Crows inside enclosure and 2 starlings. Two Costa Mesa PD on motorcycles on bike path.
May 30 - Monitors see Peregrine Falcon take adult from colony. Searcy's see Peregrine fly over.
Jun. 01 -10 surfers, 6 walkers, couple having sex, men throwing sticks in ocean for dog
Jun. 02 - Terns nest building
Jun. 03 - Camper on beach front. Numerous large squid on beach. Surfing accident with 4 lifeguard jeeps, fire truck and ambulance near enclosure and jetty. Terns agitated.
Jun. 07 - Hang glider with motor spooks terns
Jun. 08 - Ground squirrel seen inside SE corner of enclosure near fence. Wally called.
Jun. 10 - HB helicopter scares birds. Kestrel flew over. Kite flying over Preserve - moved.
Jun. 14 - Lady with pug would not leave. Lots of flights for no apparent reasons.
Jun. 15 - Woe be unto the misguided gull attempting a short-cut across the Preserve. OUCH!!!
Jun. 20 - Kestrel flyover. Two confrontations with family and tent and surfer with flapping shirt up next to front yard fencing.
Jun. 21 - 2 egg shells found outside Preserve with rodent tracks along Talbert Channel. . . "I've lived here 21 years and my dog does not bother the birds." 4-5 photographers along front yard fence.
Jun. 22 - Peregrine flew over and then flew off north.
Jun. 23 - Peregrine circled above Preserve.
Jun. 24 - Killdeer nest on SE end of front yard
Jun. 25 - Need for sign asking people to stay away from sand fencing/corridor.
Jun. 26 - Very large cardboard bird on berm in front yard. Called David P.
Jun. 27 - 1 crow and 1 Osprey
Jun. 29 - Motorized hang glider flew over Preserve for one hour. NBPD called.
Jun. 30 - 3 Semipalmated Plovers. Showed surfers chicks through spotting scope.
July 01 - GBHE flew into enclosure - driven off by LETE. Kite flying over and frisbee game moved away from front yard fencing.
July 02 - Common Tern seen resting with LETE. Small break in chick fence at S side. "I'm sick of our tax dollars being used for endangered species."
July 04 - 1 W. Snowy Plover walked all around people. When does a chick become a fledgling?
July 05 - At 421 nests. Peregrine flyover and swoop into Preserve with no take. 5150 weed puller reported at tern Preserve. Badges come and it's . . . . D. Pryor
July 06 - Fledgling flew out of enclosure, over ocean and back. Penguin cut out in Preserve.
July 09 - Osprey fishing from pole over river on PCH bridge
July 13 - Ground squirrel perched on the lookout on rocks across "pond." 2 falcon flyovers.
2 W. Snowy Plovers, one inside the "Snowy" Preserve.
July 14 - Peregrine flew over Preserve
July 16 - W. Snowy Plovers, some possible fledglings?
July 19 - 2 Ospreys fly over
July 22 - Children chasing Snowy Plovers
July 24 - Claire Grozinger sees Peregrine fly off with a chick. Reported.
July 27 - Terns fishing in channel. Could see sting rays from bridge.
July 30 - Adult feeding fledglings by calling them up for short flights and landing in quiet area or get mobbed by other young.
July 30 - Colony winding down. Lots of returning shorebirds including banded Willet.
Aug. 01 - Gull eating fledgling by waterline. It was a dying juvenile. -Harrington
Aug. 02 - Black-bellied Plover in breeding plumage frequent area
Aug. 06 - "A young LETE seems sick - sitting motionless behind (never mind - it just took off!")
Aug. 09 - Looked like kids were practicing diving in pond near Santa Ana River. Only adults came up with fish though.
Aug. 1 3 - No plovers, no Least Terns.
