INFORMATION ABOUT OUR ORANGE COUNTY SNPL SURVEYS
Through a grant and support from both USFWS and CDFW, Sea & Sage Audubon is hosting important surveys of Threatened Snowy Plovers on Orange County beaches. The goal of these surveys is to gather important spatial and temporal data on Snowy Plovers and to provide information on how wintering and breeding birds use our local beaches over time in greater detail than was available before.

Our project is using a standardized protocol that is also being used in other areas of coastal California. All of the data informs the Recovery Plan for the species and is in addition to data collected at other sites in Orange County such as Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve.

These beach-wide surveys are conducted four times per year. The Lead Biologist on the project is Tom Ryan of Ryan Ecological Consulting, who conducts the training sessions. Monthly roost surveys are conducted by Ross Griswold and Bettina Eastman, Field Technicians for the Project. Our Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator, is Cheryl Egger. She coordinates the training, beach assignments, and processes all data collected from the surveys. Please contact Cheryl at if you have any questions about the project, training, or to sign up for your beach segment.

Volunteers are expected to provide their own binoculars, to attend a training session to learn the protocols (you met this requirement if you attended any of our previous training sessions), and to conduct the survey on their assigned section of beach sometime during the survey period. Beach assignments are on a first-come, first-served basis. (It takes about 1 1/2 hours to survey a beach segment.)

It is truly an enjoyable way to help this threatened species of our own local beaches!

NEXT SURVEY DATES:
TRAINING: Volunteers are expected to have attended one of the training sessions, provide their own binoculars, and conduct the survey on their assigned section of beach during the survey period. Beaches are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

The date of the next training session to be announced later - from 8 am to 10 am at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in the Learning Center. Check in 7:30 - 7:50. Contact Cheryl Egger if you are interested in learning more about this program. The lead biologist for this project, Tom Ryan will conduct the training sessions. To reserve a beach to survey or a place in our training session, please contact Cheryl Egger at

Please print one of these out to take with you on the survey. After completion of your survey, please fill in your data on a new data form on your computer, save it, and then email it to the Volunteer Coordinator within 24 hrs. to the email at the bottom of the data sheet. You may also mail it to the address on the bottom of the sheet within 24 hrs.

Volunteers can choose the day and time to conduct their survey within the official survey period. Please contact Cheryl Egger at if you have any questions about this project or if you wish to sign up for a beach segment for the next survey.

BEACH ASSIGNMENTS:
There are 27 segments of beach from which to choose, from Seal Beach south to San Clemente. Each segment (shown in blue) is linked to a separate Google Earth map) - Those beaches which have been signed up for are marked with two asterisks and the birders' names.

The beach segments are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Ideally, under the survey protocol, there will be at least two surveyors conducting the survey for each beach segment. If you are interested in signing up for a beach for the next survey, select a beach from the open choices below and contact Cheryl Egger at to reserve your choice. Beaches are "open" beaches until at least two participants have signed up for them. The beaches are described below.
