America's Birdiest City Contest
ORANGE COUNTY CITY:  NEWPORT BEACH, CA
Count was conducted from noon May 4 to noon May 5, 2002
Organizers:  Steve & Marian Alter

Last spring, we entered the Birdiest City Contest, focusing our efforts on Newport Beach because of its very diverse habitat. Under the direction of Steve and Marian Alter, a large team of birders scoured the area within the city limits, locating a grand total of 155 species! This placed us third in the small city category, the other two being Duluth, MN, with 183 species, and Santa Cruz, CA, with 170 species.  San Diego emerged as America's Birdiest Large City with 218 species.  Here is a copy of the bird list for the Newport Beach count which was conducted from noon on May 4 to noon on May 5th., 2002.
